Supremacy of Christ

This month we begin a six-week sermon series titled Colossians: Supremacy of Christ. I chose to go through the book of Colossians because its message is one our church needs to be reminded of each day. The book speaks of the supremacy of Christ over all things. No exceptions – all things. It also contains my favorite single verse of Scripture. I often find myself reflecting on Colossians 1:15, “He is the image of the invisible God.” The very nature and being of God have become visible in Jesus Christ. Those who seek God have found him in Jesus Christ. Those looking for God’s character have seen it in Jesus Christ. Questions about who God is and what God is like come to an end when one meets Jesus face to face. As the church, it’s our mission to point our community to the image of the invisible God. How does this happen? It happens when a visitor walks into our sanctuary and sees the church in true worship. It happens when a group of teenagers arrive on the doorstep of an elderly woman’s home to deliver a hot meal. It happens when someone receives a note of encouragement in a moment of heartache. It happens when a Bible study group intercedes for someone in prayer. It happens when a husband chooses his family over the workplace. It happens on a regular basis at First Baptist.
If you want to see God - look to Jesus Christ. If you want to be the church - point people to Jesus Christ. Begin to read Colossians in preparation for this series. The entire letter can easily be read in 20 minutes. Imagine the benefits for your soul if you committed to reading and applying Colossians over the period of this six-week series. I truly believe the spiritual impact would be immeasurable. Join me in this experience and see what God will do.
