Books of 2012

I'm an avid reader and log the books I read each year. I browsed this year's list and compiled a few my favorites from 2012. In no particular order:

The Lost World of Genesis One: Ancient Cosmology and the Origin Debate by John Walton

A great addition to a much discussed topic.

The Good and Beautiful God: Falling in Love with the God Jesus Knows by James Bryan Smith

The content of this book is exceptional. The "soul training" exercises at the end of each chapter make it a perfect resource for small groups.

This book is first installment in the Apprentice Series. I would also include the other two volumes:

All is Grace: A Ragamuffin Memoir by Brennan Manning

Powerful retelling of a life that has experienced the ups and downs of a life of faith.

Philippians and Philemon (Smyth and Helwys Bible Commentary Series) by Todd Still

I used this book as a devotional aid as I studied Philippians and used it as a resource while preparing to present two conference sessions on Philemon. A great volume in a great commentary set.

In the Name of Jesus: Reflections on Christian Leadership by Henri Nouwen

A small book that I read at least once a year. Read it and read it often.

God is in the Manger: Reflections on Advent and Christmas by Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Bonhoeffer has always been a fascinating figure for me. This Advent devotional has a unique perspective. Contains portions of numerous letters written from prison during the Advent season.

The Pastor as Minor Poet: Texts and Subtexts in the Ministerial Life by M. Craig Barnes

I had to put this book down numerous times and simply say, "Whoa."
